Ok, we all know the stimulus payments have started going out, but that the payments are delayed for those of us who have not filed our 2019 taxes, or who may have owed in 2018 or 2019, or who simply do not have any direct deposit information on file with the IRS.
To facilitate the payments the IRS created a portal where you can enter your direct deposit information. Here is link:
https://www.irs.gov/coronavirus/economic-impact-payments
It looks like this:
However, PLEASE be careful. On the right side the links are for “non-filers”. That doesn’t mean someone who has not filed yet. It means people who do not have to file at all. If you are my client you are by definition NOT a non-filer.
We scroll down a little and it looks like this:
If you have a filing obligation and you enter your information using the non-filer side of the portal it appears to lock your Social Security Number. Once this happens we cannot file your return electronically. And the IRS is not processing paper returns right now. So if you do this your tax return will be in limbo for a LONG time.
I’m in contact with a couple of people trying to figure this out. If you have questions PLEASE contact me.
